The Dialogue with Dr. Carolyn Filla
This feature is a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member. So here we go with our 95th installment visiting with Dr. Carolyn Filla, Prenatal and Pediatric Chiropractor, at Bright Futures Chiropractic which helps the communities in Blount County realize how amazing their bodies are so that they can experience bright futures without sickness, disease and pain!
Describe what you do. Bright Futures Chiropractic ensures that each person's nervous system is operating without interference. With interference on the nervous system, you cannot prevent sickness, digest food properly, grow nor adapt to our ever-changing environment. I am different from most chiropractors in this area because I have done a lot of extra-curricular studies for the care of children and pregnant women. Having a properly-functioning nervous system from a young age allows children to grow and thrive as God intended them to.
How did you get started? I have known I wanted to be a Chiropractor since the fifth grade. I didn't know that Pediatric Chiropractic was an option until I was doing my undergraduate studies. It was at this time chiropractic care was recommended for my nephew because he had suffered from multiple double ear infections during the short 9 first months of his life. I have always loved children, so it was a no-brainer for me to do extra studies to help children like my nephew!
What is your background? I received my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish from the University of Wisconsin in La Crosse. I then received my Doctorate of Chiropractic from Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota. Much of my pediatric training took place during weekend seminars through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, and I only have to complete a few more classes to earn a Certification by the Academy Council of Chiropractic Pediatrics.
Who is your mentor? Similar to most people, my parents have been some of my biggest supporters. The person who has pushed me the most to this point (without actually knowing it) has been my nephew. Seeing him so sick at the beginning of his life with ear infections, pneumonia, asthma, and chronic sickness which nobody could help broke my heart. After he was adjusted at 9 months, he was a brand new child! He is now 7-1/2 and has not had another ear infection and is able to recover better in the rare chance he does get sick! That motivates me to go to work everyday to help other children experience a healthier, brighter future as well!
Describe your customers. Most of the people who come to me are families-ranging from babies all the way to grandma and grandpa! People typically come to me because of some complaint (colic, ear infections, constipation, pain, headaches, the list goes on and on!) but once they start feeling and functioning better they are committed to remain that way by continuing with "maintenance" or wellness care!
What do you enjoy most about your career? I absolutely love being a part of people regaining their health back! It is particularly special when an exhausted mom comes in because she has taken her child everywhere and done almost every single thing to help her child to no avail.
