The Dialogue with Roy Shields
This feature is a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member. So here we go with our 31st installment visiting with Roy Shields, Owner of Smoky Mountain Self-Defense
. Its mission is to offer an effective skillset and mindset to kids, teens, and adults that will provide the ability to identify, avoid and survive VIOLENCE.
What differentiates Smoky Mountain Self-Defense from other programs? Our goal is to offer kids, teens, and adults the most effective skillset and mindset we can, to make our “No More Victims” attitude a standard in our local community.
How did you get started in this business? Through a lunch time conversation with Gary Christian, a man I a proud to call my friend. As a way to provide a skillset to prevent the terrible tragedy of his daughter and boyfriend from happening to anyone ever again.
What is your background? Through previous work experience through military and federal service as well as, training in traditional martial arts to find what is most effective and teach it without the dogma.
Who is your mentor? My late father who throughout my life supported me unconditionally; instilled in me a set of values based on honor, pride, respect and integrity; as well as being my first and last teacher.
How do outside influences impact your business? Every day provides new challenges, often which are brought to and covered in our classes due to the realistic nature of our self-defense programs.
What do you enjoy about teaching self defense? The freedom that I get to do what I love and it allows me to be a more effective and present father, all the while being obedient to my calling.
