The Christman Company earns awards for UT Student Union, State Street Garage

The Knoxville branch of Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Tennessee has honored The Christman Company with Build Knoxville awards for the University of Tennessee Student Union and State Street Garage expansion projects.

The company earned a Commercial Award for the UT Student Union and an Infrastructure/Public Works/Environmental Award for the State Street Garage expansion at the AGC Build Knoxville Construction Awards reception on Jan. 16 at Jackson Terminal.

“We are incredibly proud of the impact of both projects because each impacts the lives of our neighbors every day,” said Marty Gibbs, vice president and general manager for The Christman Company’s Knoxville operations. “The Student Union helps create a sense of community among UT students and staff, and the garage expansion makes visiting downtown more convenient for Knoxville residents and tourists.”

The Christman Company oversaw construction on the multi-phase UT Student Union, starting with preconstruction in 2011 and phase one in 2012, and then completion of the final phase in December 2018.

The state-of-the-art facility is 395,088 square feet and offers eight new food venues, a production kitchen, billiards area, classrooms, conference rooms, ballroom, auditorium, conference rooms and office suites for 14 university departments. Its exterior features include two city blocks of pedestrian-friendly hardscaping and landscaping and a pedestrian bridge.

McCarty Holsaple McCarty & Barber McMurry Architects Joint Venture was the architect for the UT Student Union project, which included 70 subcontractors and vendors.

The State Street Garage expansion added 570 parking spaces in downtown Knoxville. The project also enhanced the garage’s appearance with new landscaping, better signage and new entry canopies and included features in the garage and surrounding pedestrian travel paths.

McCarty Holsaple McCarty was the lead architect for the State Street Garage project.
