Barge Design Solutions Inc., Community Fund awarded over $29,000 this spring to various organizations local to the company’s regional offices. $6,500 of this grant money was awarded to two Knoxville organizations: Laurel JustLead and Legacy Parks Foundation.
Laurel Church of Christ’s program, Laurel JustLead, was awarded $2,500 to support outreach in the Sutherland Avenue community of Knoxville. Laurel JustLead partners with Emerald Youth Foundation to foster the academic, spiritual, and physical development of Sutherland Avenue families. This grant will support the endeavor to teach youth basic construction and engineering repair through Laurel JustLead’s summer camp. The participants will relocate one structure and build another, simultaneously learning skills and meeting the storage needs of the organization’s Marble City Community Garden.
Kris Hatchell, Barge Design Solutions Associate Project Manager, and his wife DeeDee regularly donate and volunteer with Laurel JustLead. Hatchell nominated the organization for this grant.

Legacy Parks Foundation received $4,000 from the Community Fund. This grant will support the construction of Sharps Ridge Playspace, a recently acquired 40-acre plot of land adjacent to multiple underserved neighborhoods. The Playspace will connect these communities to the network of open spaces and trails in Sharps Ridge Park, providing much needed space to safely enjoy the outdoors. Since 2007, the Legacy Parks Foundation has championed conservation, restoration of greenspaces, and protection of waterways in East Tennessee. This Sharps Ridge Playspace endeavor directly supports their priorities to create more trails in North Knoxville area and create additional recreational opportunities for underserved communities.
Steve Fritts, Vice President of Land Resources at Barge’s Knoxville office, is a founding board member of the Foundation and nominated them for this grant.
