The Dialogue with Kate Schriver
This feature, a question-and-answer session with a new Blount County Chamber member, will appear every week. So here we go with our fifth installment with Kate Schriver, owner of the upcoming women's lifestyle boutique called Schriver's located at 106 E. Broadway, Maryville. Follow her progress leading up to the grand opening in March 2016 at www.facebook.com/schrivers.
Why are you in business? Schriver's is a women's lifestyle boutique that offers everything from contemporary casual apparel, home decor, accessories, and locally made items. We are here to provide our customer with quality products that they will love for years to come. We want to provide women of all ages a great boutique shopping experience. There are many boutiques that target college age women and younger, but we want all women within our community to feel like they can find something they love at Schriver's. We are also passionate about supporting our community which is why you will find a selection of hand made local items within the store.
Describe what the business does. We style all aspects of our customer's lives. At Schriver's they can purchase a great new outfit, jewelry, and something for their home and their best friend.
How did you get started in this business? My great grandfather, Robert Schriver and his brothers, opened the original Schriver's in Knoxville on Gay street in 1912. You can still see the Schriver's insignia in the window today! Schriver's then and now has stood for high quality merchandise and great customer service. I am taking that model, relocating, modernizing and reopening it in the Spring of 2016 in the heart of historic downtown Maryville.
How did you get the background and skills necessary to run this type of business? I received my degree in Fashion merchandising and management from the Art Institute of Nashville.
Whom do/did you seek advice before/during the operation of your business? Everyone I could! Being a family business I reached out to people who spent time in the origional Schriver's and knew my great grandfather and his brothers. My grandmother, Julia Schriver, has been a huge inspiration to me.
Describe your customers. Our customers are women that range anywhere from their late 20s and above. We want to cater to all women within Blount county and the surrounding areas that have an interest in stylish clothing, accessories, and home decor.
What do you enjoy about running your business? I love the process. Learning the ins and outs of setting up a business, purchasing and renovating a space, working with vendors to purchase merchandise, and so on. It's all been wonderful. We cannot wait to meet everyone at our official opening in March 2016! Check out our facebook page to keep up to date on building renovations, products, and weekly outfit inspiration!
